4th year Medical Student Elective Rotations

Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital welcomes current 4th year medical students, in good academic standing from LCME or AOA accredited medical schools, interested in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

This elective will provide a fundamental knowledge of the principles of PM&R through inpatient care and didactic discussion.  Medical students will have exposure to a broad range of adult patients (pediatric experience is available upon request) with brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions such as hip and knee replacements, amputations, multiple traumas, neuromuscular disorders, and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Medical students working under direct supervision of attending and resident physicians will interact with the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team including physical and occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, social workers, and rehabilitation nurse specialists.  Students interact with all members of the rehabilitation team and observe in the therapy gyms a variety of specialized rehabilitation techniques.  Students begin to develop the necessary skills to effectively manage the inpatient rehabilitation care of persons recovering from a variety of illnesses.  Students are expected to attend weekly didactics. .

Elective rotations are offered monthly - August through June

Elective rotations begin on the first Monday of the month and end on the last Friday of the month.

One rotation for a total of 4 weeks is permitted per medical student.

Applications for less than or more than 4 weeks will not be considered.

Typical day: 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

No weekend or on-call duty is required

Eligibility Requirements

Medical students must be in their final year (senior student status), good academic standing, and have successfully completed core clerkships in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Surgery prior to the date the elective is requested.

Applications that do not contain the required items listed below will not be processed until application is complete with ALL supporting documents.

Health Requirements - Documentation of immunizations or lab reports showing results of antibody titers for immunity to:  

  • Rubeola (measles) as shown by a positive titer or two documented doses of live virus vaccine administered after the 1st birthday.

 

  • Mumps as shown by a positive titer or two documented doses of live virus vaccine administered after the 1st birthday.

 

  • Rubella as shown by a positive titer or documented dose (1) of live virus vaccine administered after the 1st birthday.

 

  • Varicella as shown by a positive titer, evidence of two vaccinations.

 

  • Hepatitis B:  Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series of 3 injections with positive titer.

 

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) Vaccine: One dose within the past ten years.

 

  • Tuberculosis Documentation: A negative test for tuberculosis, as shown by a negative Mantoux test within 6 months of the start of elective rotation date, or a negative chest x-ray within the past 12 months.

 Additional Supporting Documents include:

  • Photo of medical student
  • Current ACLS provider certification
  • Proof of personal health insurance
  • Certificate of Malpractice Insurance
  • Documentation of negative drug screen and criminal background check
  • USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 passing score
  • Confidentiality Agreement

Confirmation

Confirmation of the elective rotation will be sent via e-mail once all application material has been received and approved.

Housing

Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital is a freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the Western suburbs and does not have the resources for student housing.  Students are responsible for their own accommodations.  A list of housing options is available to students whose elective has been confirmed.

Meals

Students are responsible for all of their meals.

Parking

Parking is provided, at no charge, to students participating in an elective rotation.  Students are asked to park in the garage on levels 2 and above.  Students must register their car (make, model, year & license plate number) with Security on their first day of the rotation.

Visiting Student I.D. and White Jacket

Visiting student picture I.D. and white jacket is required in the clinical setting. 

Cancellations

Once an elective rotation has been confirmed, the student is expected to complete the rotation. If cancellation is necessary, student will cancel at least 30 days in advance.  The student’s medical school will be notified of cancellations.

All visiting medical students are expected to comply with policies set by Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and the Residency Program of Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital.
