The IADL of Community Mobility

Driving and community mobility is a topic that many professionals, in a variety of settings, are asked to address. For many individuals, driving is their primary method of community mobility. A special education teacher or school therapy team may be asked to address how a teen’s special needs will impact her ability to drive. A physician, case manager, social worker, therapist or nurse may be asked by a patient recovering from a medical condition for approval to drive. An older person or an individual with a progressive disease may need assistance planning retirement from driving.

This course will address the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to community mobility across the lifespan. In addition to specific approaches for preparing an individual with disability for driving, methods of safely accessing alternative transportation will be addressed.

The course will be divided in two parts.

DAY ONE: The first day is intended for all professionals to address community mobility both within their setting and through referral.

DAY TWO AND DAY THREE: The second and third days are intended for Occupational Therapists with a strong interest in Driver Rehabilitation. A large component of these days is the behind the wheel experience with a wide variety of adaptive driving equipment. In order to maximize driving time, participation is limited to a maximum of 18 individuals. NOTE: Days two and three are for OT Practitioners only. Other professionals with experience may attend with prior approval. Contact ahegberg@Marianjoy.org.

Linked: Breathing & Postural Control

This course will challenge the practitioner to make a paradigm shift; acknowledging the importance of the cardiopulmonary system as an integral component of postural control. The speaker will present a model of postural control (Soda Pop Can Model) that demonstrates how breathing mechanics are linked to motor and physiologic behaviors. This is the cornerstone for the speaker's multi-system clinical approach to the evaluation and treatment of trunk and/or respiratory impairments. The speaker will finish the day by presenting how to use this information clinically to develop positioning and ventilatory strategies that establish the pulmonary system as an asset rather than a liability for patients, regardless of whether their original diagnoses were physiologic or physical.

Instructors: Mary Massery, PT, DPT, DSc
